Reminiscing on Snow Days Growing Up…

snow-days-1

Today’s snow day has me remembering all the snow days I enjoyed growing up! I’m from a town near Charlotte, North Carolina, so snow days were pretty rare. So anytime there were a few inches on the ground, it was a BIG DEAL.

My dad would always put out a bowl to catch the snow in to make snow cream, and it was delicious (and FULL of sugar)! My brother, my parents and I would all go out sledding where the high school was behind our house. The school had athletic fields that had some good hills. I remember forcing my dogs several times onto my lap to sled down the hill with me and they weren’t thrilled lol. If we were really lucky, it would snow enough that we could make a snowman! Hot chocolate was always a must when we came inside!

I asked my dad for his famous snow cream recipe and here’s what he said:

“I kind of wing it but here are the basics:

  1. Put bowl out to catch fresh falling snow (avoid ice or sleet mix).
  2. Mix with condensed milk (or any milk will do)
  3. Teaspoon or less or real vanilla extract (don’t use imitation)
  4. Add generous amount of sugar.

Go easy on milk add a little at a time to you get the right consistency. Should not be runny. Add food coloring if feeling festive lol.”

So there you go! Next time it snows put a bowl out to catch that fresh snow, or if you can find some snow on the ground that’s clean enough, go for it!
