1.  The first college football game ever involved a Canadian school.  The game was between McGill University from Montreal and Harvard in 1874, and it ended in a 0-0 tie.  (They also played a soccer-style game that Harvard won 3 to 0.)

 

 

2.  The idea of detectives using magnifying glasses came from Sherlock Holmes.  He used one in the book “A Study in Scarlet” in 1887, and the image stuck.

 

 

3.  Samuel Morse, the guy who invented Morse code, really wanted to be an artist . . . and only got into electromagnetics in his 40s once he finally declared his art career a flop.
